Q: What is the mission of the Energy Management (EM) program?
A: The Energy Management Program seeks to produce a business graduate with a strong and diversified understanding of both the domestic and global energy industries.

 

Q: Which sectors of the energy industry can an Energy Management graduate enter when he/she graduates?
A: Graduates are expected to find opportunities in the areas of exploration and production, land management, property administration , energy financing and economics, as well as in areas involving the trading and marketing of energy commodities.

 

Q: What particular skills will I learn?
A: The strength of the new Energy Management curriculum lies in the fact that the courses draw on the strengths of OU's core energy colleges(Michael F.Price College of Business, Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy, College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences,College of Law).Your business negotiation and administration skills will be built on a solid combination of selected courses from Management, Accounting, and Finance disciplines. You will also learn in depth about the legal environment of an organization as well as the legal aspects of energy exploration, production, and trading. A unique blend of Geosciences and Petroleum courses further enhance your comprehension of oil, gas, and minerals.

 

Q: Why should I consider a major in Energy Management?

A:

  • We offer a strong and diversified business curriculum, providing an option for a business minor of your choice. This program is the recipient of The Most Innovative in Excellence Award for Curriculum Design,from the Southwest Business Deans Association.
  • Scholarships- Highest ratio of scholarship amounts awarded per student in the Price College of Business.
  • This program provides excellent career opportunity with starting packages that are consistently the highest on campus.
  • Internships-The energy industry provides practical work experience for the energy management students during the summer.
  • Energy Management students have the opportunity to attend educational seminars and conferences around the nation.

Q: Could you explain more about the opportunity for a minor degree?
A: The Energy Management curriculum is designed with a built-in 12 hours of upper-division business concentrations. A minor degree will be awarded if you enroll all 12 hours in one of the following disciplines: Accounting, Finance, Management, Management Information System, Marketing. You may, however, opt to spend those 12 hours in a blend of disciplines and thus skip a specified minor.

 

Q: What is the recommended minor?
A: In order to take the optimum advantage of the EM curriculum, it is recommended that students pursue a minor in Finance. This will provide EM graduates career opportunities in either upstream(exploration and production) midstream(gathering systems and pipelines) downstream(trading and marketing).

 

Q: What is the range of salary packages being offered Energy Management graduates?
A: As of the most recent academic year, salary packages ranged from $50,000 to $80,000. These packages may include any signing bonuses, retention bonusesrelocation expenses and reimbursement of school tuition for final year.

 

Q: What about salary packages for summer Internships?
A: Salary packages are currentlyranging from $3,000/month to $5,500 a month. Many of these internships provide reimbursement of moving expenses to and from Norman, in addition to monthly housing allowances plus they lead to permanent employment.

 

Q: What campus and industries activities are available to Energy Management students?
A: The Energy Management Student Association holds meetings every month during the semester. These meetings often feature industry executives as guest speakers.Field trips are available to students at least one per semester.

Q: How do I learn more about scholarships offered to Energy Management students? How do I apply for a scholarship?
A: You can read about scholarship availability on our student website (http://price.ou.edu). Scholarship applications are available during the academic year in EM office 105-K in Adams Hall. All EMSA students are notified by email of scholarship opportunities and deadlines.

 

Q: How can I post or update my resume on the program website?
A: Information relating to posting resumes is available at the OU Career Services website (www.Hiresooner.com).

 

Q: How do I find out about internship and job offerings?
A: Most internships and job offerings are available through University of Oklahoma's Career Service Office. We suggest that you register or renew with them at the beginning of each fall semester. Also, check with the program office often as many employers choose to contact the program directly. In the Energy Management Student Association students are also notified by email of all internship opportunities.

 

Q: How to get credits for an internship?
A: You need to fill out an application from the EM Program office, Room105-k and gain permission from EM faculty chair, prior to taking the internship. Internship credits are only available if you are a Price college degree candidate and have taken EM 3001.

A: Our graduates possess negotiation and commercial acumen skills that are built on a solid combination of selected courses from Management, Accounting, and Finance disciplines. They also have an in depth understanding of the legal environment of an organization as well as the legal aspects of energy exploration, production, and trading. Also most graduates will have worked at least 2 summer internships within the energy industry.
